Creating Multiple Quiz Submission Views

SHIRLEY HENSCH, Lead Instructional Designer, University of Wisconsin Colleges

When students submit a quiz through Desire2Learn, they see a confirmation screen. By default, the message they see reads: "Your quiz has been submitted successfully," and they see the score for their attempt. However, creative use of the Submission View feature in D2L can provide more informative feedback for students. The default view can be adjusted and additional views can be added.

The best way to illustrate the strength of this little known feature is to use an example from one of our classes that uses the Quiz tool for the course exams.

The message students see when they submit their exam reads:

"Your exam has been submitted successfully. Once your instructor has graded the short answer/essay questions, your score will be posted to the gradebook. You will be able to review your test to determine which questions you answered incorrectly once the deadline for completing the test has passed. However, the answers will be available for only one week."

The students also see their attempt score at that point (for the auto-graded items), but they do not see any of the exam questions or any other information.

Two additional views have been added to each of the exams in this class. The first additional view is set to open at 12:01 a.m. the day after the exam closes. This timer has to be set manually, but it is set when the view is created. Once the timer is triggered, the message changes to read:

"On the exam you completed, you answered the questions listed below incorrectly. For each of these questions the correct answer is indicated. Please review this material and make certain you understand it before the final exam. You can post questions in the discussion area if you are not certain about why a particular answer is correct or incorrect."

While this view is displayed, the options under View Details have also been changed; they are set to show only the questions that were answered incorrectly along with the correct answer for each of those questions. In this way, each student receives individualized feedback that focuses on the specific errors that he or she has made in taking the exam.

Finally, a third view is set for one week after the answers are released to students. The View Details are set back so they are the same as the original settings, and the message changes to read:

"The opportunity for you to review this exam is now over. If you have any questions about your score on the exam, please contact your instructor."

This example just touches the surface of creative ways in which the Submission View feature can assist instructors in providing timely, individualized feedback to their students. For example, the additional views can also provide feedback based on which attempt the student is completing or based on the score that a student obtained on the quiz.
